Antioch (modern Antakya), Syria, on the Orontes River

Antioch’s importance is twofold. First, it modeled the ethnic diversity appropriate to the gospel that brings people of all backgrounds into the one family of God (see Eph. 2:11–22). Second, it became the primary missionary church of earliest Christianity. All three of Paul’s missionary journeys began at Antioch.

Today the notion that the religion of some people should be urged on others who already have their own religion is widely rejected. But it should be remembered that Jesus taught that he was the only way to the heavenly Father (John 14:6) and that to be his disciple meant taking the good news of salvation through him to others (Matt. 28:19–20).
